GANO'S MUSICAL EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AS A PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN

Junior High and High School:  Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, began study of music in the 8th grade on clarinet.  In high school, learned saxophone in order to play in dance bands.  In  junior year, formed the  11 piece Gano Evans Orchestra, which played on a regular basis in the Denver area for the next two years.

College and Beyond: As a music major at Colorado State College, (now The University of Northern Colorado) spent weekends and summers playing saxophone and clarinet in dance bands on one-nighters in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. In the Navy, played in several station bands and combos. After the service, the situational demands of marriage and the time constraints associated with a position as a new management trainee in industry led to the conclusion that music would have to be an avocation. Eventually, after deciding on a career in academia, went on to earn MBA and PhD degrees resulting in 43 years as a university professor / administrator in the areas of management and marketing.

Return to the Jazz Scene: During his 19-year "day gig" as Professor of Management and Marketing at the University of Nevada-Reno, decided to become active in the area's jazz scene and became a member of "FOR THE LOVE OF JAZZ", a large society of fans and professional jazz musicians in Reno.  After being appointed to  the Board of Directors and serving as First Vice President, was elected President and served three terms. While Gano was serving as an MC at a jazz festival, a musician friend introduced him to Bev and they discovered their mutual jazz interests. This led to marriage and a lifetime sharing of their jazz avocation.

A Chance to Be a Sideman Again (1988-2000) In 1988, after being appointed to an academic position as Chairperson of the Department of Business Administration at  Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia; became acquainted with several musicians in the local jazz community. This resulted in joining the  18-piece FREDERICKSBURG BIG BAND, playing tenor saxophone and clarinet.  In addition to playing in the reed section for 12 years, served as Co-Leader In Charge of Programming and Master of Ceremonies.
